So, how many coconut trees can I plant on one plot?
Simple question, abi?
But don't be too quick to answer it.
Because when a farmer says:
“I have one plot.”
My next question is:
And sometimes the person looks at me like:
“Plot is plot now!” 😂
No o!
A plot is not one universal size across Nigeria.
Depending on the location and the way land is measured and sold, you may come across dimensions such as:
And these are not the same land area.
So if you ask me:
“How many coconut trees can I plant on one plot?”
I cannot responsibly give you one number until I know the dimensions of your plot and the spacing you want to use.
That is what we are going to calculate in this article.
This is where we need to start.
When somebody says:
“I bought one plot.”
That tells us the number of plots.
It doesn't necessarily tell us the exact land area.
For example:
100 × 100 = 10,000 square feet
But:
100 × 50 = 5,000 square feet
And:
120 × 60 = 7,200 square feet
Can you now see the difference?
All three people can say:
“I have one plot.”
But they don't have the same amount of land.
Before you buy your seedlings, find out:
Then calculate:
Length × Width = Area
If your land is 100 ft × 100 ft:
100 × 100 = 10,000 sq ft
If it is 100 ft × 50 ft:
100 × 50 = 5,000 sq ft
If it is 120 ft × 60 ft:
120 × 60 = 7,200 sq ft
Now we have something we can work with.
This is the second part of the calculation.
Knowing your plot size is only half of the story.
You also need to know:
This is called planting spacing.
And spacing matters because your coconut trees will not remain small seedlings forever.
Today, you may look at your seedling and say:
“There is plenty of space!”
Give it time. 😂
That small seedling is going to grow.
So you must plan for the mature plantation, not only what the farm looks like on planting day.
I wouldn't advise you to simply say:
“Let me put as many trees as possible on this plot.”
More trees do not automatically mean more profit.
If you plant too closely, you can create competition for:
And it can make farm management more difficult.

Read that before deciding your final planting layout.
Suppose your plot is:
That gives you:
10,000 square feet.
Now imagine you want to use approximately 7 m × 7 m spacing.
Remember, 7 metres is approximately 23 feet.
So you might initially think:
“23 feet between trees. Let me divide the plot.”
But don't simply divide 100 by 23 and assume the answer is the exact number of trees.
Why?
Because you need to consider:
This is why the final number should be treated as a layout calculation, not just a quick division.
The answer is:
And I want that answer to become normal among farmers.
Because somebody may tell you:
“One plot can take 20 coconut trees.”
Another says:
“No, it can take 30.”
Another:
“I planted 40 on mine.”
All three may be talking about different plot sizes or different spacing arrangements.
There is no single number that automatically applies to every plot in Nigeria.

Look at that carefully.
A 100 × 100 ft plot is twice the area of a 100 × 50 ft plot.
Yet both owners may simply say:
“I have one plot.”
That is why you must know your actual dimensions.
This is one of the mistakes I want beginners to avoid.
Someone gets excited.
They say:
“I have one plot. Let me buy 30 coconut seedlings.”
Then they reach the farm.
They start planting.
Tree here.
Tree there.
Another one over there.
Suddenly:
“Yinka! We don't have space again!”

That problem could have been avoided.
This is common too.
Some plots are irregular.
Maybe one side is longer.
Maybe there is a corner.
Maybe there is a building.
Maybe there is a road setback.
Maybe there is a drainage channel.
Maybe there is an existing tree.
Don't simply calculate the total area and assume every square foot is plantable.
You need to consider the actual usable planting area.
For example, if part of the plot is occupied by:
then that area isn't available for coconut planting.
This is very important for people planting coconut around their homes.
Don't calculate:
“My plot is 10,000 sq ft, therefore I can plant X number of trees.”
If your house occupies 2,000 sq ft, you no longer have 10,000 sq ft available for coconut.
And you need to consider access and other structures too.
So:
This is why a proper farm layout is useful.
You also don't want to plant the first row directly on the boundary simply because you want to maximise the number of trees.
Leave appropriate space for:
The exact layout will depend on your farm design.
Remember:
It is a system that needs to be accessible and manageable.
There isn't one universal spacing that applies to every coconut plantation.
Spacing depends on factors such as:

For example, coconut production guides commonly use spacing in the range of several metres between palms, but the appropriate spacing varies by variety and production system.
This is why I don't want you to hear:
“Plant exactly X metres everywhere.”
and apply it blindly.
Your planting design should match your particular coconut variety and farming system.
This is another reason why the question:
“How many coconut trees can I plant on one plot?”
doesn't have one universal answer.
If you are planting dwarf coconut, your spacing considerations may differ from those used for tall varieties.
Hybrids can also have their own recommended arrangements.
So before buying seedlings, know:
Then calculate.
Here is the basic idea.
Measure your plot.
Length × Width = total area
Determine the spacing.
For example:
7 m × 7 m
or whatever spacing is appropriate for your variety and system.
Convert the land dimensions into the same unit.
Don't calculate one side in feet and the other in metres.
Convert everything first.
Create your planting layout.
Don't simply divide the total area.
Leave room for boundaries and access.
Count the actual planting positions.
That gives you a more realistic number.
A layout helps you see the plantation before you put the seedlings in the ground.
You can determine:
Imagine planting 30 trees and later discovering:
“Ah! I should have left space for my irrigation line.”
Now you are moving things around.
Plan first.
Yes, you can plant coconut on a small piece of land if the site is suitable and the trees can be properly managed.
But don't think:
“Small land means I should squeeze everything together.”
No.
Your goal is not to win a competition for the highest number of seedlings on a plot.
Your goal is to establish healthy coconut trees.
Same principle.
Measure it.
Don't simply say:
“Half plot means half the number of coconut trees.”
It might be approximately half if the dimensions and layout are proportionally suitable, but the actual number depends on the shape and usable area.
For example, half of a 100 × 100 ft plot is not necessarily arranged in the same way as a separately purchased 50 × 100 ft parcel.
The shape can affect your layout.
Now you can repeat the calculation.
But again, don't automatically assume:
2 plots = exactly twice the number of trees.
If the plots are separated, irregularly shaped or used for different purposes, your layout may change.
If they are contiguous and you are treating them as one farm block, planning becomes easier.
This is another very important point.
A plot is not the same thing as an acre.
An acre is a standard unit of area:
But a "plot" can have different dimensions.
That means the number of plots you can get from an acre depends on what your local plot size actually is.
For example:
10,000 sq ft.
One acre is approximately 4.36 of those plot areas.
But:
5,000 sq ft.
One acre is approximately 8.71 of those plot areas.
And:
7,200 sq ft.
One acre is approximately 6.05 of those plot areas.
Can you now see why someone saying:
“One acre is six plots”
may be correct in one local land-measurement context but not universally correct?
It depends on the plot size.
If someone tells you:
“The land is five plots.”
Don't stop there.
Ask:
Because five 100 × 100 ft plots are not the same total area as five 100 × 50 ft plots.
The word plot alone isn't enough for accurate farm planning.
Still ask for the actual dimensions.
Don't be shy.
You are buying land.
You need to know what you are paying for.
Ask:
“What is the length?”
“What is the width?”
Then verify it.
For farm planning, measurements matter.
Now let's return to the question.
If you tell me:
“I have one plot.”
I will ask:
Which dimensions?
Then:
What coconut variety?
Then:
What spacing are you using?
Then:
What part of the plot is actually available for planting?
Then:
Do you need access paths or irrigation lines?
Only after those questions can we make a reasonable estimate.
This is a very important lesson.
A farmer may say:
“I want to plant as many coconut trees as possible.”
But I would rather hear:
“I want to plant the right number of coconut trees for my land and management system.”
Because more trees don't automatically equal more profit.
If the trees are overcrowded, poorly nourished or difficult to manage, you can create problems for yourself.
Not wasted land.
This is something beginners sometimes forget.
When you plant a seedling, you are looking at a small plant.
But your farm is not being designed for the seedling.
Think ahead.
The trees need room.
Your workers need room.
You need access.
Your irrigation system needs room.
Harvesting needs access.
Farm maintenance needs access.
That's why spacing decisions should be made carefully.
Now we are getting into another interesting topic.
Some farmers may want to grow other crops between young coconut trees while the plantation is still establishing.
Depending on the system, this can potentially help make use of available space during the early years.
But you must consider:
Don't just plant any crop between coconut trees because:
“There is empty space.”
The space is there partly because the coconut trees need room to grow.
If you intercrop, plan it properly.
This is where the idea of starting small becomes practical.
If your goal is to establish just 10 trees, you don't necessarily need a massive farm.
But you still need to consider:
spacing
water
soil
sunlight
maintenance
access
Even 10 trees deserve proper planning.
Ten healthy trees are better than 30 overcrowded trees that struggle.
Now the importance of planning becomes even greater.
At this level, you need to think more carefully about:
And if you are establishing hundreds or thousands of trees, you should move from casual measurement to a proper farm layout.
Let's say you tell me:
“Yinka, I have 100 ft × 100 ft land.”
Good.
We now know the land area.
Then you tell me:
“I'm planting hybrid coconut.”
Good.
Now we discuss the recommended spacing for your specific variety and production system.
Then we look at:
Then we calculate your planting positions.
That is how I want farmers to think.
Not:
“One plot = X number of coconut.”
Let's say somebody tells you:
“One plot can take exactly 20 coconut trees.”
Don't immediately believe or reject it.
Ask:
Once you ask those questions, you will understand where the number came from.
Before you buy seedlings, take a piece of paper.
Draw the shape of your land.
Write the dimensions.
Mark:
Then mark your proposed coconut positions.
Even a simple drawing can prevent expensive mistakes.
Let's use this as a practical reference.
A 100 × 100 ft plot has:
But that does not mean all 10,000 square feet should be filled with coconut trees.
You still need to plan your spacing.
And if you are using a spacing of approximately 7 metres × 7 metres, you should expect the actual number of planting positions to depend on your layout and boundary allowances.
This is why I prefer saying:
“A 100 × 100 ft plot can accommodate a certain number of coconut trees depending on the spacing and layout.”
rather than pretending there is one exact number for every farmer.
This plot has:
It is half the area of a 100 × 100 ft plot.
Naturally, it will accommodate fewer trees at the same spacing.
But again, the final number depends on how you arrange the trees.
This gives:
Again, different from both examples above.
So if somebody says:
“I have one plot.”
Your next question should be:
“How many feet by how many feet?”

That question will save you plenty of confusion.
Remember these three:
Length × Width
Based on your variety and production system.
After accounting for:
Once you have these three, your calculation becomes much more realistic.
You may be wondering:

Because your planting density and water management are connected.
If you establish a large number of young coconut trees, you need to be able to manage them.
Especially during dry periods.

Suppose your plot can technically accommodate 25 trees.
But you can only afford to properly establish and maintain 15.
There is no prize for planting 25 and losing 10.
Agriculture is about management.
A healthy plantation is more valuable than an overcrowded plantation.
Whenever somebody asks:
“How many coconut can I plant on one plot?”
Remember:
First know your dimensions.
Then know your spacing.
Then calculate the usable planting area.
Then design the layout.
Then decide how many seedlings you can actually afford to establish and maintain.
Start with the land.
What are the exact dimensions?
What type of coconut are you planting?
What spacing is appropriate?
Where will each tree be positioned?
How will you water the seedlings?
Have you marked where each seedling will go?
Can you move around the plantation?
Is the soil suitable and properly prepared?
Can you properly maintain the number of trees you plan to plant?
So, how many coconut trees can you plant on one plot?
And I'm happy to give you that answer because I would rather teach you how to calculate it than give you a number that may be wrong for your land.
Remember:

or another dimension.
Then you have to consider your coconut variety, spacing, layout and usable planting area.
So don't rush to buy seedlings.

This question comes up a lot. But how many states in Nigeria can plant coconut?
Somebody from Lagos asks.
Another person from Abuja asks.
Someone from Kano says:
“Can coconut grow here?”
Another person from Kaduna asks the same thing.
Then somebody living abroad wants to buy land in Nigeria and asks:
“Which state should I buy land in if I want to plant coconut?”
And sometimes I hear people say:
“Coconut is only for people in the South.”
Hmm.
Let's slow down there.
Because if you are planning to invest in coconut, you should understand something very important:
You need to understand what coconut actually needs to grow well.
And when you understand those requirements, you will realise that the conversation is much bigger than simply naming three or four states.
So, how many states in Nigeria can plant coconut? Here is my honest answer.
Coconut is already grown commercially in several parts of Nigeria, particularly in the southern and coastal areas.
But that doesn't mean every farm site outside those traditional areas is automatically unsuitable.
At the same time, it would also be wrong to say:
“Every single location in all 36 states will grow coconut equally well.”
Agriculture doesn't work like that.
Two farms in the same state can have completely different:
And therefore, their suitability can be different.
“Can coconut grow successfully on my particular farm site?”
That is the question I want every farmer to ask.
There is a reason people think this way.
If you travel through parts of southern Nigeria, especially areas with a long history of coconut cultivation, you will see coconut trees.
You see them around homes.
You see them around farms.
You see them in plantations.
You see them in coastal communities.
So people naturally associate coconut with the South.
And there is some logic behind that.
Coconut generally performs well in warm tropical conditions, and Nigeria's southern regions have many areas with conditions favourable to coconut.
But here's where we need to separate two things:

Instead of memorising a list of states, let's understand the crop.
If you want to know whether your state or farm can support coconut, start with these factors.
Coconut is a tropical crop.
It likes warm conditions.
It is not a crop you should approach as if every climate is equally suitable.
Temperature and overall climatic conditions matter.
That means you need to consider the conditions of your specific location rather than simply saying:
“Nigeria is hot, therefore coconut will grow everywhere.”
No.
Nigeria is a large country with different ecological zones.
This one is extremely important.
FAO guidance on coconut production also highlights the importance of adequate moisture and rainfall conditions for the crop.

A location that receives seasonal rainfall may still require irrigation during dry periods.
So don't just ask:
“Does it rain here?”
Ask:
“Do I have enough reliable water for my coconut during the periods when rainfall is inadequate?”
That is a much better question.

Another mistake people make is looking only at rainfall.
They say:
“There is plenty of rain here, so coconut must grow.”
Not necessarily.
The soil matters.
You need to consider things such as:
Coconut roots need a suitable environment to develop.
And remember:
You want water availability.
But you also need proper drainage.
That distinction is very important.
Let's imagine you find a location where water is everywhere.
You may think:
“Wonderful! Coconut will love this place.”
Not so fast.
If the site remains excessively waterlogged and poorly drained, that can create problems for the roots.
So when evaluating land, don't only ask:
“Is there water?”
Also ask:
“Where does the water go?”
A good farmer asks both questions.
This is something people sometimes underestimate.
The same crop can perform differently under different management systems.
Two farmers can plant the same coconut variety.
One farmer:
The other farmer:
Will the two farms necessarily perform the same way?
Of course not.
I would not make such a blanket statement.
Instead, I would ask:
If the climate, water supply, soil and management conditions are suitable, the conversation changes.
But the further you move away from areas where coconut is traditionally well established, the more carefully you should assess the site's suitability and water requirements.
You should not simply hear:
“Coconut can grow outside the South.”
and then buy land without checking anything.
That is not what we are saying.
We are saying:
This is the kind of question people ask.
“Can I plant coconut in Abuja?”
Instead of giving a careless yes or no, I would say:
Assess the site.
Look at:
If you have a location where conditions are suitable and you can manage water properly, you can investigate coconut cultivation.
But don't take this as:
“Every piece of land in Abuja is suitable for coconut.”
That would be irresponsible advice.
Same principle.
Don't start with:
“Kaduna is not a coconut state.”
Start with:
“What are the conditions on this farm?”
You need to assess the environment.
And if water is going to be your biggest limitation, then solve the water issue before establishing a large number of trees.
This is why your farm location and irrigation plan should be considered together.
Again, don't simply look at the state name.
Look at the conditions.
If you are considering coconut in an area with a pronounced dry season, water management becomes particularly important.
And before investing heavily, you need to understand whether the local climate and site conditions are suitable enough to justify the project.
Start with proper assessment.
Nigeria has long-established coconut production in parts of the southern and coastal regions, including areas of states such as:
There are also coconut-growing communities and plantings in other parts of the country.
But I don't want you to turn this list into:
“These are the only states where coconut can grow.”
That is not the lesson.
Your actual farm still needs to be assessed.
Let's say someone tells you:
“Buy land in State X. Coconut grows there.”
You buy 20 acres.
Then you discover:
The soil isn't what you expected.
The land floods.
Water access is poor during the dry season.
The road is bad.
Farm management becomes difficult.
Labour is expensive.
There is no nearby market.
Now what?
The farm site matters.
This is why when you are buying land for coconut, I want you to think beyond:
“Which state?”
Think:
“Which location, which soil, which water source and which farm conditions?”
This is an important point.
Imagine State A.
One part has:
Another part has:
Can we honestly say:
“State A is suitable for coconut”?
Yes, broadly.
But that doesn't mean every piece of land in State A is suitable.
That's why serious farmers assess the actual site.
Now this is where things get interesting.
If you already have land, don't immediately start looking for another state.
First ask:
You may already have what you need.
Get the land assessed.
Understand the soil.
Check the water situation.
Look at drainage.
Consider the climate.
Check accessibility.
Then make your decision.
Sometimes the best farm location is not the one you find on social media.
It may be the land you already own — if it is suitable.
Don't panic.
But don't assume success either.
This is where proper testing becomes important.
You can start with a small trial or demonstration area where appropriate, while paying close attention to the site's conditions and management requirements.
If the results are encouraging and the economics make sense, you can consider scaling.
Test and learn before making a large commitment where uncertainty is high.
This is another reason farmers ask this question.
They may hear:
“Dwarf coconut can grow faster.”
Or:
“Hybrid coconut is better.”
And then assume:
“So any state can now grow coconut.”
No.
The variety matters, but it doesn't remove the need for suitable environmental conditions.
You still need:
Choosing a good variety is important.
But a good variety cannot magically turn an unsuitable site into a suitable one.
Water management can certainly make a difference, especially in locations where rainfall is seasonal or dry periods are significant.
But irrigation is not magic either.
You still need to consider the site's overall suitability.
Think of irrigation as one important management tool, not a replacement for everything else.
If you have to pump enormous amounts of water simply to keep the plantation alive because the underlying conditions are unsuitable, you need to ask:
“Does this business still make economic sense?”
That's the question a commercial farmer should ask.
This is another reason I keep talking about water.
Suppose you want to establish a large coconut plantation.
You calculate:
Land
Seedlings
Labour
Manure
Fertilizer
Irrigation
Maintenance
Harvesting
Transport
But many people calculate irrigation only as:
“I'll get water somehow.”
No.
How much will it cost to:
That becomes part of your farm economics.
Rainfall remains important.
But again, don't simply ask:
“Does this state receive rain?”
Ask:

The state you choose affects the conditions under which you establish and manage the plantation.
Here is what I want you to remember.
Someone may ask:
“Which state is best for coconut?”
I would rather ask:
“What does the farm need?”
If the farm provides those conditions, you have something to investigate.
If it doesn't, don't force it simply because somebody says coconut is profitable.
If you are considering planting coconut anywhere in Nigeria, use this checklist.
Is the soil suitable?
Have you properly assessed it?
Do you have reliable water, particularly during dry periods?
What is the local rainfall pattern?
Does the land drain properly?
Are the local climatic conditions suitable for coconut?
How much land do you actually have?
And how many trees can it accommodate?
Remember that plot sizes differ by location, so don't assume that every "plot" has the same dimensions.
Who will manage the farm?
Can people, inputs and harvests reach the farm?
Where will you sell your coconut?
After calculating all your costs, does the project still make sense?
This is the biggest lesson from this article.
If somebody asks me:
“Yinka, which state can plant coconut?”
I don't want them to leave with only a list of state names.
I want them to leave understanding this:
Some areas have a long history and naturally favourable conditions.
Other locations may require more careful site selection and water management.
And some individual sites may simply not be suitable.
This is common.
Maybe you live in Lagos but your land is in Ogun.
Maybe you work in Abuja but your farm is in Ondo.
Maybe you live abroad and your land is in Akwa Ibom.
That's okay.
Your farm location should be evaluated on its own merits.
And if you are not physically present, make sure you have somebody reliable to monitor:

Poor management is.
This is where I would advise you to slow down.
Don't start with:
“I want 10 acres of coconut land.”
Start with:
“I want 10 acres of land that is suitable for coconut farming.”
That one sentence can save you plenty of trouble.
Before paying for land, investigate:
soil
water
drainage
climate
access
ownership
security
labour
market
farm economics
You are not buying land just to say:
“I have 10 acres.”
You are buying land because you want to build a productive coconut farm on it.
Here is my honest answer.
I would not tell you:
“Yes, every single location in all 36 states can grow coconut successfully.”
That is too absolute.
But I also would not tell a farmer:
“If your state is not traditionally known for coconut, forget about coconut.”
That is also too simplistic.
Coconut cultivation is possible in many parts of Nigeria, but the suitability of a particular farm depends on climate, water, soil, drainage and management.
Some areas are naturally more favourable.
Some areas may require additional water management and careful site selection.
Some sites may not be suitable.
You may have noticed that water keeps appearing in almost every Coconut Knowledge Centre article.
That's not by accident.

What will it cost?
What will the expected market look like?
Not by following rumours.

So, when should I plant coconut in Nigeria?
This sounds like a very simple question.
But when you start talking to farmers, you will discover that it is not that simple.
One farmer will tell you:
“Plant when the rain starts.”
Another one will say:
“Don't plant coconut during dry season o!”
Then somebody else will say:
“Dry season is even better if you have irrigation.”
And now the farmer is confused.

So which one is correct?
The honest answer is:
But the best time for you depends on the conditions you can provide for the young coconut after planting.
And this is where many people get it wrong.
They are looking for a particular month.
But the better question is:
“When can I give my coconut seedlings the best conditions to establish properly?”
That is the question we need to answer.
Let's start from the beginning.
A coconut seedling is not a mature coconut tree.
A mature coconut tree has an established root system.
It can tolerate conditions that a newly planted seedling may not handle as easily.
But when you take a young seedling from the nursery or container and move it into the field, the plant has to adjust.
It has to establish itself.
Its roots need to grow into the surrounding soil.
It needs water.
It needs nutrients.
It needs protection from competition.
It needs proper care.
So when we talk about the best time to plant coconut, what we are really talking about is:
And that is why rainfall and water availability are so important.

For many farmers, rainy-season planting is the easier option.
Why?
Because rainfall can supply much of the water the young coconut needs after planting when it provides adequate moisture.”
This can reduce the amount of irrigation you need to provide, especially when rainfall is regular and well distributed.
Imagine a farmer who has:
Now imagine another farmer who has:
These two farmers don't have the same planting options.
The first farmer may find the rainy season much easier.
The second farmer may have the flexibility to establish coconut during a dry period.
There is a simple reason.
Rainfall can make establishment easier.
After planting your coconut seedlings, you don't have to carry buckets of water every day from a distant source if the rains are supplying adequate moisture.
This can reduce:
But there is something important here.
Please don't do that. 😂
Some farmers think:
“Rain is falling, so the coconut will take care of itself.”
No.
Rainfall is only one part of successful establishment.
You still need to consider:
Rain also makes weeds grow.
And sometimes the weeds seem to be growing faster than your coconut!

If weeds are competing with young coconut seedlings for water, nutrients and sunlight, that is not good farm management.
More water is not always better.
If your soil holds excessive water or the planting site has poor drainage, that can create another problem.
You don't want to replace:
“My coconut is thirsty”
with:
“My coconut is sitting in water.”
So before planting, understand your land.
Rainfall cannot correct poorly prepared soil.
If the planting hole is poorly prepared, the soil condition is poor, or you have ignored important soil considerations, simply waiting for rain will not solve everything.
Your farm still needs monitoring during the rainy season.
You need to observe your seedlings.
Look at the leaves.
Look around the stem.
Check the soil.
Watch for signs that something is wrong.

This is where I want us to remove one common misconception.
The main difference is that you have to take responsibility for the water that rainfall is not providing.
If you have reliable water and a proper irrigation plan, you may be able to establish coconut during the dry season.
This is particularly important for farmers who have access to:

“There is a river somewhere around the village.”

Can you consistently get the water to the seedlings when they need it?
Yes, potentially.

A borehole is one possible water source.
It is not the only possible water source.
But you still need a realistic water plan.
For example, if you have access to a reliable well and can transport water to the farm, that is very different from having no water source at all.
The question is:
“Can you provide adequate water to your young coconut seedlings during periods when rainfall is insufficient?”
If yes, dry-season establishment may be possible.
If no, then don't force it.
This is where I want farmers to be careful.
Imagine you plant 100 coconut seedlings.
You are excited.
You take pictures.
You post them online:
“My coconut plantation has started!”
Everybody congratulates you.
Then the rain stops.
One week.
Two weeks.
More days pass.
You don't have irrigation.
You don't have reliable water.
Now your beautiful planting project has become a problem.
This is why I always say:
The day you put the seedling into the ground is only the beginning.
Let me make this very simple.
But what your coconut needs is:
If rainfall provides it, excellent.
If irrigation provides it, excellent.
If a combination of rainfall and irrigation provides it, also fine.
The coconut does not care whether the water came from a cloud or from your storage tank. 😂
The plant needs the appropriate growing conditions.
That is why a farmer with irrigation has more flexibility than a farmer who depends entirely on rainfall.
I would not tell you:
“Plant exactly on this particular date every year.”
Why?
Because Nigerian rainfall patterns are not identical everywhere.
The beginning and end of the rainy season vary by location.
Even within the same broad region, rainfall can be different from one year to another.
So instead of memorising a date, watch the conditions.
You want to see that the rainy season has become sufficiently established to support the newly planted seedlings.
And don't just look at one rainfall event.
One heavy rain does not necessarily mean the rainy season has properly arrived.
This is a mistake I want beginners to avoid.
You wake up one morning.
Rain falls heavily.
You say:
“Ah! Rain has started! Let's plant!”
Hold on. 😂
Ask yourself:
Because you don't want to plant based on one rainfall event and then experience a long dry spell immediately afterward.
Dry-season planting requires more planning.
Before you plant, ask:
That last question is very important.
Don't calculate only:
“I can afford 500 seedlings.”
Calculate:
“Can I afford to establish and maintain 500 seedlings?”
There is a big difference.
Let's say you can easily carry water for 10 coconut seedlings.
Fine.
Now imagine you plant 500.
The water requirement, labour and logistics become a different challenge.
This is why your planting scale should match your resources.
Sometimes starting smaller is wiser.
You can learn.
You can improve your system.
Then expand.
This happens.
You planned to plant during the rains.
But land preparation delayed.
Your water system is incomplete.
Your seedlings are already available.
What do you do?
Don't panic.

Easier establishment for farmers without irrigation
Where rainfall is reliable, this can be a major advantage.
Lower water-related labour
You may spend less time and money moving water.
Rainfall may be irregular.
Heavy rain can create drainage problems on poorly prepared sites.
Weeds can grow aggressively.
Poorly timed planting can still expose seedlings to dry spells.
So even rainy-season planting requires management.
You have greater control over when water is supplied.
If you have irrigation, you are not completely dependent on rainfall.
Farm activities may be easier to schedule around rainfall.
You can deliberately plan your watering.
Higher irrigation requirement
You have to provide the water rainfall is not supplying.
Higher labour or irrigation costs
Especially if water has to be transported manually.
Greater risk if water supply fails
This is very important.
If your irrigation system breaks down or your water source becomes unavailable, young seedlings can be exposed to moisture stress.
More attention is required
You need to monitor the seedlings and soil more closely.
If you are a beginner and you do not have reliable irrigation, I would generally favour establishing your coconut during a suitable period of the rainy season rather than putting young seedlings into a dry field with no dependable water source.
Why?
Because you are reducing one of the major challenges you have to manage.
But if you are a farmer with:
then dry-season establishment can be considered.
The important thing is not just choosing the right season. You also need good seedlings, proper land preparation, correct spacing and a plan for caring for the young trees. Now we have the opposite situation.
Your land is perfect.
You have cleared it.
You have measured your spacing.
The planting holes are ready.
But you have no reliable water.
What should you do?
If the rainy season is approaching and you can reasonably depend on rainfall for establishment, you may decide to wait for a suitable rainy period.
If you are considering dry-season planting, solve your water problem first.
And if you need time to do that, use it.
Prepare.
Plan.
Budget.
Arrange your water source.
Then plant when you can properly establish the seedlings.
Now we are getting to the heart of the matter.
People always ask:
“When is the best month to plant coconut?”
But I want you to start asking a better question:
If your farm is ready during the rainy season and rainfall is suitable:
Plant.
If your farm is ready during the dry season and you have reliable water and proper management:
You can consider planting.
If neither your land nor your water system is ready:
Prepare first.
That is better than rushing.

Farmer A has 2 acres.
The farmer has no irrigation.
The land is ready.
The rainy season has properly started.
The farmer has healthy seedlings.
The farmer has labour available.
This farmer may have a good opportunity to establish the plantation during the rainy season.
Farmer B has 2 acres.
The farmer has a reliable borehole and irrigation system.
The land is prepared.
The seedlings are ready.
The farmer has labour and a proper maintenance plan.
This farmer has more flexibility.
The farmer may be able to establish the coconut during a dry period because the water requirement can be deliberately managed.
And therefore, different planting decisions.
This is one of my biggest concerns with generic farming advice.
Someone says:
“Coconut must be planted in June.”
Another person says:
“No, plant in July.”
Another says:
“Only plant during rainy season.”
But where is the farmer?
What is the soil like?
What is the rainfall pattern?
Does the farmer have irrigation?
Is the land ready?
Are the seedlings ready?
The calendar gives you a guide.
Your farm conditions determine the final decision.
If you come to me and say:
“Yinka, should I plant now or wait?”
I will ask you questions.
Do you have water?
Is the land ready?
Are the seedlings ready?
What is your soil like?
What is your planting scale?
Who will manage the farm?
What season are you entering?
Then we can make a better decision.
Because I don't want to give you an answer based only on the month.
I want you to understand why you are planting at that time.

Prepare your planting layout.
Prepare your budget.
Prepare your management plan.
Then plant.
Because our goal is not to say:
“I planted coconut.”
Our goal is to say:
“I established a healthy coconut plantation.”

Before spending money on seedlings and preparing your farm, ask yourself: why should we plant coconut?”
This is a very good question.
Because before you spend money buying seedlings, preparing land and establishing a plantation, you should know why you are doing it.
I don't want you to hear:
“Coconut is profitable!”
Then you rush to buy 100 seedlings.
No.
First understand the opportunity.
Understand the waiting period.
Understand the work.
Understand the possible income streams.
Understand the risks.
Then decide if coconut is something you want to build.
And if you ask me:
I will give you several reasons.
This is one of the biggest reasons I like coconut.
When you plant a coconut tree, you are not thinking only about today's harvest.

You are establishing a perennial crop.
That means your thinking changes from:
“What can I harvest this season?”
to:
“What agricultural asset am I building for the future?”

You are watering it.

Some people have land.
They bought it years ago.
Or inherited it.
Or their parents left it for them.
But the land is just sitting there.
Every year, bush.
Every year, clearing.
Every year, nothing productive is happening.
Now imagine establishing a properly managed coconut plantation on suitable land.
The land is no longer simply:
“That piece of land we have somewhere.”
You are trying to turn it into a productive agricultural asset.
Of course, this does not mean every piece of land is automatically suitable for coconut.
You still need to consider:
But where the conditions are suitable, coconut can be one way of putting agricultural land to long-term productive use.
This is the part everybody wants to hear. 😂
“Yinka, how much can I make?”
Slow down!
Before we talk about money, remember something:
If you harvest coconut and sell it, that is revenue.
But you still have costs.
Labour.
Transport.
Farm maintenance.
Inputs.
Harvesting.
Processing, if you process.
Marketing.
Management.
And other expenses.
So I don't want anybody reading this article and thinking:
“If I plant 100 trees, I am guaranteed to make X amount of money.”
No.
Agriculture doesn't work that way.
Your eventual financial results will depend on things such as:
But the important point is this:
That is the opportunity we are interested in.
Think about this carefully.
When you plant some annual crops, you harvest and the crop cycle ends.
Then you prepare the land again.
Plant again.
Wait again.
Harvest again.
With coconut, the tree remains in the plantation.
Once mature and productive, it can continue producing over multiple harvest cycles.
That changes the economics of the farm.
Instead of thinking:
Plant → harvest → start again
you are building:
Establish → maintain → harvest repeatedly
That is one of the reasons perennial crops can be attractive for long-term agricultural planning.
This is a very important reason for planting coconut.
Let me ask you something.
Many people are busy working today.
Salary comes.
Bills are paid.
Children's school fees.
Rent.
House projects.
Family responsibilities.
Business expenses.
And retirement looks very far away.
Until one day...
You realise:
“Ah! Retirement is actually close.”
Then the question becomes:
“What will be generating income for me when I am no longer earning my current salary?”
This is where long-term agricultural assets can become interesting.
You can begin building them while you are still working.
Coconut will not replace your salary tomorrow.
That is not the point.
The idea is:
If you establish and properly manage a coconut plantation years before retirement, it may become part of your agricultural income portfolio later.
Not a guarantee.
Not magic.
A long-term project.
This one is close to my heart.
Imagine a father or mother planting coconut today.
The children are still young.
They grow.
The coconut trees grow.
Years pass.
The children become adults.
The plantation is still there.
That is a different kind of inheritance.
You are not only saying:
“I left you land.”
You are trying to leave:
“I left you productive land.”
That is powerful.
Because land by itself may appreciate in value, but a well-managed agricultural property can also have productive capacity.
Your children can potentially inherit:
Now, this is where coconut becomes even more interesting.
Sometimes people hear coconut and think:
“I will harvest the coconut and sell it.”
That's one option.
But coconut has a much broader value chain.
Depending on your market and processing capacity, you can have opportunities around:
So your business doesn't necessarily have to stop at:
tree → nut → buyer.
There can be opportunities to move further along the value chain.
And this is where another important principle comes in:
Let me give you a simple example.
Suppose two farmers produce coconut.
Farmer A sells the raw product immediately.
Farmer B has the knowledge, equipment, market and capacity to process part of the harvest into another product that customers are willing to pay for.
They have both produced coconut.
But their businesses are not necessarily the same.
Farmer B has moved further along the value chain.
That doesn't automatically mean Farmer B will make more money.
Processing comes with:
But it shows you something important:
It can also be a value-chain opportunity.
I don't like putting all your eggs in one basket.
If you already farm maize, cassava, vegetables, yam or other crops, coconut can potentially form part of a broader farm strategy.
You could have:
short-term crops
alongside
medium-term crops
and
long-term perennial crops.
Why?
Because they serve different purposes.
A short-duration crop may give you a quicker turnover.
A perennial crop like coconut is a longer-term project.
So your farm can be structured with different income horizons.
This is one of the ways farmers can think beyond:
“What will I harvest this year?”
and start thinking:
“What will my farm produce this year, next year and many years from now?”
Here is something beginners don't always appreciate.
Your coconut plantation is not only about planting trees.
You are also building knowledge.
While the trees are growing, you can be learning about:
This is important.
Because if you wait until your first major harvest before asking:
“Who will buy my coconut?”
You may have waited too long.
Remember:
Production is only one side of farming.
The other side is selling.
I sometimes tell people:
Don't look at land only as land.
Look at what the land can produce.
A piece of land can become:
Of course, the land must be suitable and properly managed.
But this mindset is important.
Instead of saying:
“I have two acres.”
Start asking:
“What can I build on these two acres?”
That question changes everything.
This is one of the reasons coconut can be accessible to different categories of people.
You don't necessarily have to begin with a massive plantation.
If you can properly manage 10 trees, start with 10.
If you can manage 50, start with 50.
If you have the land, capital, water and management structure for 500 or 1,000, then you can plan at that scale.
But don't let another farmer's scale determine yours.
Because planting 1,000 coconut trees is easy compared with maintaining 1,000 coconut trees.
Anybody can buy seedlings.
The real question is:
Can you manage them?

Where practical and profitable, explore ways of moving beyond raw produce.
That is the bigger picture.
You will see people advertise farming like this:
“Plant coconut and become a millionaire!”
Hmm.
Please be careful.

Agriculture doesn't work like that.
If somebody tells you that planting 10 coconut trees guarantees a certain amount of money every year, ask questions.
Where did the calculation come from?
What yield are they assuming?
What selling price?
What age of the trees?
What variety?
What management level?
What cost of production?
What market?
What losses?
Not just the promise.
When you invest in coconut, there are several financial possibilities to consider.
You can sell the harvested coconuts into the market.
Depending on the variety and market, different stages of maturity can have different uses and buyers.
You may eventually process some harvest into products.
Parts of the coconut that might otherwise be discarded can have uses within the value chain.
The plantation itself represents an agricultural asset that can continue producing when properly managed.
But remember:
Your actual financial performance must be calculated from your own farm.
There is another benefit that doesn't immediately show up in your bank account.
When you establish a coconut farm, you learn:
That knowledge can become valuable beyond one farm.
This is perhaps the biggest lesson.
Coconut teaches patience.
You plant something today knowing that the biggest rewards are not immediate.
You maintain it when nobody is clapping.
You water it.
You weed it.
You protect it.
You keep learning.
You keep investing.
And gradually...
The small seedlings become trees.
The trees become a plantation.
And the plantation becomes an asset.

They don't have the same amount of time.
Person B has given the trees more time to establish and the farm more time to develop.
This doesn't mean everyone should immediately rush out and plant.
It means:
And coconut is definitely a crop that requires that mindset.

Coconut may suit someone who:
But it may not suit somebody looking for immediate income.
And it certainly doesn't suit somebody who wants to plant and disappear.

The absence of a borehole doesn't automatically end your coconut project.
But you still need a reliable water plan.
If your farm isn't ready, you can use the preparation period wisely.

3. Do I have suitable land?
4. Where will my water come from?
5. Can I afford to maintain the trees?
6. Who will manage the farm?
7. What is my long-term market plan?
8. Am I prepared to wait and manage the plantation properly?
If you can answer these questions honestly, you are already thinking more seriously than somebody who simply says:
“I heard coconut is profitable.”
Before you spend money buying seedlings, learn how to choose good coconut seedlings in Nigeria.
This is where I want to leave you.
Don't look at your coconut seedling and see just a tree.
See the possibility of:
a plantation.
See:
an agricultural asset.
See:
a future harvest.
See:
a value chain.
See:
a business that needs management.
And if you are thinking about retirement, see the possibility of building something today that may contribute to your income strategy in the future.
But always remember:
Your results will depend on how well you plan, establish, manage, harvest and market the farm.

So, who should plant coconut in Nigeria?
Another person will say:
“I don't have farming experience. Can I plant coconut?”
Someone else will ask:
“I live abroad. Can I invest in coconut farming in Nigeria?”
And somebody who has been working for 20 years may quietly ask:
“Can I plant coconut now and use it as part of my retirement plan?”
Then there is another person who has 10 acres of land but has never planted anything before.
And another one has only a small piece of land.
So, who should plant coconut in Nigeria?
Coconut is not only for traditional farmers.
But it is also not for everybody who simply has land.
That distinction is very important.
Coconut is a long-term crop. It requires planning, proper establishment, maintenance, patience and a clear understanding of what you want to achieve from the plantation.
Nigeria already has a significant coconut sector, particularly in the southwest, and recent FAO/UNIDO work describes the Nigerian coconut value chain as being dominated by smallholder farmers and small processors.
So yes, ordinary farmers can grow coconut.
But let's talk about who should plant it — and who should think twice before planting.
If you are a farmer who is thinking beyond one planting season, coconut can be an interesting crop to consider because it is a long-term crop.
If you have decided that coconut is something you want to explore, the next step is to learn how to start properly, choose good seedlings and get the right support. You can join the Coconut Planting Challenge to begin that journey with other coconut farmers.
Why?
Because you are not looking at coconut the same way you look at a short-duration crop.
With crops like cucumber, watermelon or vegetables, you are usually thinking about a much shorter production cycle.
Coconut is different.
You are establishing a perennial plantation.
That means when you plant your coconut today, you are thinking about the years ahead.
You are building something that can become a productive farm asset rather than simply planting for one harvest.
That is one reason I personally like coconut.
You don't just plant it and forget it.
You establish it.
You maintain it.
You watch it grow.
And eventually, you have a plantation.
Let's be honest.
There are people with land that has been sitting there for years.
The grass grows.
The bush grows.
People pass through it.
And every year the owner says:
“One day, I will do something with this land.”
Another year comes.
Nothing happens.
Another year comes.
Still nothing.
If you have suitable agricultural land, coconut can be one of the crops worth investigating.
But please notice that I said:
Don't hear:
“I have land, therefore I should plant coconut.”
No.
Before planting, you still need to consider soil, water, climate, drainage, access and management.
Research on coconut suitability in parts of southern Nigeria, for example, has found that soil and climate characteristics can create major differences in suitability even within an area.
So the land needs to be assessed.

This one is very important.
Sometimes people think agriculture means:
“I need ₦20 million before I can start.”
Not necessarily.
You need to understand the difference between starting and building everything at once.
You can start with a manageable number of coconut trees.
Then learn.
Then expand.
Then improve your infrastructure.
Then add more trees.
Then develop other parts of the farm.
This is especially important for someone who is new to agriculture.
I would rather see a beginner properly manage a small number of coconut trees than plant hundreds or thousands and abandon them because the project became too expensive to maintain.
That is a principle I strongly believe in.
Now let's talk about doctors.
Engineers.
Bankers.
Teachers.
Civil servants.
Business owners.
People working in offices from Monday to Friday.
Can they plant coconut?
Yes.
But there is a condition.
This is where many professionals make mistakes.
They say:
“I have money. I will just buy land and plant coconut.”
Then they disappear.
Three months later:
“How is the farm?”
Nobody knows.
Six months later:
“Please send me pictures.”
The farm manager sends pictures.
The weeds are taller than the coconut seedlings. 😂
That is not investment.
That is abandonment.
If you are a busy professional, you need:
Technology can help you monitor the farm remotely, but technology cannot replace management.
This is another group I receive questions from.
Someone may be living in:
London.
Canada.
America.
Germany.
Dubai.
Or somewhere else.
They may have family land or may want to acquire agricultural land in Nigeria.
And they ask:
“Can I invest in coconut farming even though I don't live in Nigeria?”
The answer is yes, it is possible.
But I would put one big warning beside it.
Being abroad is not the problem.
Poor management is the problem.
If you are outside Nigeria, you need a strong local structure.
You need to know:
Don't just send money to somebody because:
“He's my brother.”

Family relationship is not a farm management system.
Put proper accountability in place.
This is one of the reasons coconut interests me so much.
Imagine somebody who is still working today.
You are 35.
You are 40.
You are 45.
You are 50.
You know retirement is coming eventually.
Instead of waiting until retirement before thinking:
“What will I do when I stop working?”
You can begin building agricultural assets earlier.
Coconut is interesting in this context because you are establishing a perennial crop rather than chasing only one planting season.
But please understand something:
You don't plant today and expect retirement income next month.
It requires time.
It requires maintenance.
It requires proper planning.
And the eventual income depends on production, prices, markets, costs and how well the farm is managed.
So if you are thinking about coconut as part of retirement planning, start early and think long-term.
I want to talk to young Nigerians here.
Sometimes when we say "farming", people immediately picture an old man with a cutlass walking through a farm.
Agriculture has changed.
There is production.
There is irrigation.
There is nursery management.
There is farm technology.
There is marketing.
There is processing.
There is logistics.
There is packaging.
There is export.
There is digital marketing.
There is agricultural education.
There is data.
There is farm management.
And there is the entire coconut value chain.
FAO and UNIDO's work on Nigeria's coconut sector specifically highlights opportunities across production, processing, markets, infrastructure and services.
So a young person doesn't necessarily have to say:
“I don't want to farm.”
You may simply need to discover which part of agriculture fits your strength.
This one is emotional for me.
Sometimes a parent tells me:
“I want to plant something my children can benefit from.”
I understand that.
Imagine planting coconut trees while your children are still young.
As the trees grow, your children are also growing.
They watch the farm develop.
They learn about agriculture.
They learn about patience.
They learn that wealth is not always created overnight.
And hopefully, one day, they can inherit something productive rather than simply inheriting land.
Of course, the farm still needs to be properly managed.
Land alone doesn't generate income.
A productive agricultural asset requires management.
This is probably one of the most important points in this entire article.
You don't have to know everything before you start.
But you must be willing to learn.
You should be willing to ask questions like:
What variety should I plant?
How do I identify good seedlings?
What spacing should I use?
What soil does coconut need?
How do I prepare the planting hole?
How do I manage water?
How do I control weeds?
What fertilizer should I use?
What pests should I watch for?
When does coconut begin producing?
Where will I sell my harvest?
These are not small questions.
They are part of becoming a coconut farmer.
And this is exactly why we are building the Coconut Knowledge Centre.
Because I don't want somebody to buy ten seedlings and then spend the next three years guessing.
You don't need to begin with a massive plantation.
This is where the idea of planting a manageable number of trees becomes useful.
For example, you may decide:
“Let me start with 10 coconut trees.”
Another person may say:
“I can properly manage 50.”
Another may have the capacity for 500.
Another may want 5,000.
The important thing is not to copy somebody else's number.
If you can only properly manage 10, plant 10.
Don't plant 100 because your neighbour planted 100.
Agriculture is not a competition.
Now this is where I want to be very honest.
Because every agricultural article wants to tell you:
“Plant this crop! Make money! Become rich!”
I don't want to do that.
There are people who should not rush into coconut farming.
If your question is:
“How quickly can I recover my money?”
You need to understand the nature of coconut before committing.
Coconut is a long-term crop.
If you need a crop that gives you quick turnover, you should study crops with shorter production cycles alongside coconut.
Coconut can be part of your long-term farm strategy.
But don't expect it to behave like a quick vegetable crop.
This is serious.
Some people love planting.
They don't love maintenance.
They plant.
Take pictures.
Celebrate.
Then disappear.
That is not enough.
A young coconut farm needs attention.
You need to consider:
water
weed control
soil fertility
pest and disease monitoring
replacement of dead seedlings where necessary
general farm maintenance
If you cannot provide the management, reduce the scale.
This is one of my biggest warnings.
Someone tells you:
“Coconut is profitable.”
You immediately buy land.
No soil assessment.
No water plan.
No market research.
No budget.
No management structure.
No knowledge.
Then when things become difficult, you say:
“Agriculture doesn't work.”
No.
You didn't really have a farm plan.
You had a promise of profit.
There is a difference.
Even though Nigeria's coconut value chain has significant economic potential, the sector still faces challenges such as low productivity, ageing plantations, processing limitations and market-access constraints.
So don't confuse potential with guaranteed profit.

If you are planting during a dry period, this becomes even more important.
Ask:
Where will the water come from?
If you cannot answer that question, stop and solve it.

You don't have to become an agronomist.
But you need basic knowledge.
If somebody says:
“Just plant the seedlings and nature will take care of everything.”
Please be careful.
Nature is not your farm manager. 😂
You need to understand what is happening on your farm.
Even if you employ somebody to manage it, you should know enough to ask the right questions.
This one can cost you plenty of money.
You find land at a very attractive price.
You say:
“Ah! This is cheap. Let me buy it.”
Then you discover later that the soil, drainage, water availability or other site conditions create major limitations.
Land suitability matters.
Research in southern Nigeria has shown that coconut suitability can vary substantially with soil physical properties and climate.
So before buying land specifically for coconut:
Don't let a cheap piece of land become an expensive mistake.
This is perhaps the biggest mistake beginners make.
Someone has enough money to buy 1,000 seedlings.
So they buy 1,000.
But can they:
If not, start smaller.
If I were to describe the kind of person who should seriously consider coconut, I would say:
✅ Understands that coconut is a long-term investment.
✅ Has suitable land or is willing to properly assess land before planting.
✅ Has access to reliable water or can develop a realistic water plan.
✅ Is willing to learn.
✅ Can maintain the farm.
✅ Can start at a scale they can afford.
✅ Is patient.
✅ Understands that farming involves both production and marketing.
✅ Is willing to monitor the farm even if somebody else is managing it.
✅ Has a clear reason for planting.
That last one is important.
Before you buy your first seedling, answer this question:
Is it because:
You want a long-term agricultural asset?
You want to prepare for retirement?
You want to diversify your investments?
You have family land you want to put to productive use?
You want to build a farm for your children?
You want to become a commercial farmer?
You want to enter the coconut value chain?
You simply love coconut farming?
There is no wrong answer.
But knowing your reason will help determine how you approach the farm.
For example, someone planting 10 trees around their family property is not operating the same way as someone establishing a 20-acre commercial plantation.
A professional living abroad needs a different management structure from a full-time farmer living beside the farm.
A retiree needs to think differently from a young entrepreneur who wants to build a commercial agribusiness.
A beginner needs a different starting point from an experienced coconut farmer.
That is why I don't like one-size-fits-all farming advice.
This is another thing people sometimes miss.
When they hear coconut, they think:
“Sell coconut nuts.”
But coconut has a much bigger value chain.
There is fresh coconut.
Coconut water.
Coconut milk.
Coconut oil.
Copra.
Coconut flour.
Coconut-based products.
Husks and other by-products.
Processing.
Marketing.
Trading.
And other services around the value chain.
FAO's recent work on the Nigerian coconut sector specifically identifies production, processing, aggregation, markets and value addition as areas where the value chain can be strengthened.
So your future may not necessarily be only:
Plant → harvest → sell.
You may eventually find another part of the value chain that fits your business better.
This is something I want a beginner to remember.
When you are starting something new, it is easy to become overwhelmed.
You hear:
Soil!
Spacing!
Fertilizer!
Water!
Pests!
Market!
Processing!
And you say:
“Ah! Is this one farming or university?” 😂
Relax.
Learn one thing at a time.
First understand your land.
Then understand your seedlings.
Then understand planting.
Then maintenance.
Then marketing.
Then value addition.
That's why we are building this Knowledge Centre one question at a time.
Let me give you a simple test.
Answer YES or NO to these questions.
If you answered YES to most of these questions, you may have a good foundation to start investigating coconut farming seriously.
If you answered NO to several of them, don't be discouraged.
It simply tells you what you need to solve first.
This is something I want to emphasize.
The person with the biggest farm is not automatically the best farmer.
The person with the most seedlings is not automatically the most successful.
And the person who starts first is not necessarily the person who wins.
Sometimes the farmer who starts with 10 properly managed trees and learns consistently will do better than someone who plants 1,000 trees and cannot maintain them.
That is how you build something sustainable.
So, who should plant coconut?
Farmers can plant coconut.
Young people can plant coconut.
Busy professionals can plant coconut.
Retirees can consider coconut as part of a long-term agricultural plan.
Nigerians in the diaspora can invest in coconut with proper local management.
Landowners can consider coconut where the land is suitable.
Beginners can start small and learn.
But nobody should plant coconut simply because they heard:
“Coconut is profitable.”
Plant because you understand why you are planting, what the farm will require, how you will manage it and what you want the plantation to become.
That is the difference between simply planting coconut and building a coconut farm.
