If you ask me:
“Yinka, what is the best soil for coconut farming?”
I will tell you something immediately:
I know how we farmers can be.
You go to a farm.
You pick up the soil.
You look at it.
“Hmmmm... this soil is black. It must be very fertile!”
Not necessarily.
Another farmer sees sandy soil and says:
“Ah! Nothing can grow here.”
Not necessarily either!
Soil is more than colour.
When you want to establish a coconut farm, you need to understand the soil, drainage, moisture, fertility and the condition of the land.
And this is one of the reasons I always tell farmers:
Coconut can grow in different soil types, but it generally performs best in deep, well-drained soils with good moisture-holding capacity and adequate fertility.
This is important because coconut needs water, but it does not mean the roots should sit in stagnant water.
Those two things must work together.
Coconut grows best when the soil, drainage, water and nutrient conditions are properly managed. The FAO's sustainable coconut production guide provides useful guidance on these requirements.
This is one mistake I want you to avoid.
You visit a farm and the soil is always wet.
You say:
“Wonderful! There is plenty of water here. Coconut will love this place.”
Please wait!

Ask another question:
If water is sitting around the root zone for long periods, that can create problems for the roots.
So when looking at land for coconut, don't only ask:
“Does this soil have water?”
Also ask:
“Does this land drain properly?”
That is a much better question.
If you are planning your investment, you should also understand how long coconut takes to start producing in Nigeria.
Now let's talk about something farmers often ask me.
Coconut is well known for its ability to grow in sandy coastal soils, but that doesn't mean every sandy soil is automatically perfect for coconut farming.
Very sandy soils can have low nutrient-holding capacity and may lose water quickly.
So if you are farming on sandy soil, you need to pay attention to:
On the other hand, very heavy clay soil can have drainage problems.
So you don't want to look for one magic soil texture and say:
“This is the only soil where coconut can grow.”
The actual soil condition and farm management matter.
Now, many farmers love the word:

Anytime somebody says:
“The soil is loamy.”
Everybody becomes happy.
And yes, a well-structured loamy soil can be very useful for agriculture.
But again, don't stop at the word.
Ask:
Does it drain well?
Can the roots develop properly?
Does it retain adequate moisture?
Is there enough organic matter?
What is the nutrient status?
That's the type of thinking I want you to develop.
Remember, you are planting a tree.
The roots need an environment where they can develop.
If the soil is severely compacted, poorly drained or otherwise restrictive, the young coconut can struggle to establish.
This is why land preparation is important.
You are not just preparing the surface of the farm.
You are preparing an environment for the root system.
When you look at your young coconut, you see the leaves.
But underneath that soil, something very important is happening.
The roots are growing.
And the health of those roots will influence the future of your coconut tree.
This is something I would always recommend.
Ask:
Was it maize?
Cassava?
Vegetables?
Was it pasture?
Was the land abandoned?
Was it previously waterlogged?
Was it continuously cultivated?
Has fertilizer been used heavily?
You can learn a lot by understanding the history of the farm.
Sometimes the land itself will tell you a story.
You just need to listen.
This is one of the best investments you can make before establishing a commercial farm.
Don't simply assume:
“The previous farmer planted something here, so the soil must be good.”
You don't know what nutrients are available.
You don't know the soil pH.
You don't know whether there are nutrient deficiencies.
You don't know whether there are other limitations.
A soil test can give you useful information to guide your fertilizer and soil-management decisions.
And this is especially important if you are investing significant money into a coconut plantation.
Depending on the soil test and laboratory, you may receive information about things such as:
The exact testing package depends on the laboratory.
But the principle is simple:
Coconut can tolerate a fairly broad range of soil conditions, but slightly acidic to neutral soils are generally suitable, with commonly cited favourable ranges around pH 5.5–7.0, depending on the production environment and soil characteristics.
But please don't become obsessed with one number.
If your soil test says:
pH 5.4
Don't immediately say:
“Coconut cannot grow here!”
That's not how it works.
Soil pH is only one part of the picture.
You also need to look at:
Coconut is a productive crop.
So the soil needs to supply nutrients to support growth and production.
But here is where I want you to be careful.
Fertilizer can supply nutrients.
But good soil management involves much more than throwing fertilizer around.
You should think about:
A healthy soil environment gives your coconut a better foundation.
Organic matter can help improve soil structure and moisture retention, depending on the soil.
This can be especially useful in soils that are very sandy or have low organic matter.
You can consider properly decomposed organic materials as part of your soil-management strategy where appropriate.
But please:
That's not what we are trying to achieve.
We want to improve the soil.
We don't want to burn or damage the young plant.
Now let's talk about something relevant to Nigeria.
Some of the areas where coconut is traditionally grown have sandy soils, especially coastal environments.
And this is one of the interesting things about coconut.
It can perform in sandy environments.
But sandy soil comes with its own management considerations.
Water can move through it quickly.
Nutrients can also be more easily lost.
So if you are establishing coconut on sandy land, pay particular attention to:
You may need irrigation when rainfall is insufficient.
Improving organic matter can help the soil hold moisture and support better soil structure.
You may need to monitor nutrients carefully.
Mulching can help conserve moisture.
So don't say:
“It's sandy, therefore it is useless.”
And don't say:
“Coconut likes sand, therefore I don't need to manage the soil.”
Both are wrong approaches.
Now let's go to the other side.
Suppose you have heavy clay soil.
The soil may hold water very well.
That sounds good.
But if drainage is poor, you can have another problem.
So before planting coconut on heavy soil, pay attention to:
Where drainage is a major limitation, you need to address the land-management problem rather than simply planting and hoping for the best.
Please!
I have to say this again.
You see one corner of your land that holds water.
Then you think:
“Let me just put some coconut there.”
No!

If water remains there for long periods, that is a warning sign.
Remember:
So inspect your land carefully.
Another thing to watch is erosion.
If heavy rainfall constantly washes soil away from your farm, you need to think about soil conservation.
You don't want to establish your coconut plantation and then lose valuable topsoil year after year.
Depending on your land, you may need to consider:
Your soil is an asset.
Sometimes farmers ask:

And I ask:

Because soil and water management go together.
A soil may have good characteristics, but if your farm experiences prolonged moisture stress and you have no water-management plan, the young palms can suffer.
This is particularly important during establishment.
That's why when you are planning your coconut farm, ask:
Where is my water source?
Can I irrigate if necessary?
How far is the water from the farm?
What will it cost to get water to the trees?
These are farming questions.
This is something I want farmers to understand.
Don't look at your soil and say:
“This is what I have. Nothing can be done.”
There are soil-management practices that can improve the growing environment.
You can work on:
But first:
Don't apply something just because another farmer used it.
Imagine you spend a lot of money establishing a coconut farm.
You buy seedlings.
You clear the land.
You hire labour.
You plant.
Then you start applying fertilizer without knowing what the soil actually needs.
You may be wasting money.
Or worse, you may create another problem.
Then make your soil-management decisions based on information.
That is how I want you to farm.

And where possible, test your soil before establishing a commercial coconut farm.
Before you start planting, ask yourself:
If you can answer these questions, you are already thinking more seriously about your coconut farm.
You can buy the best coconut seedling.
You can use the right spacing.
You can prepare the farm beautifully.
But if the soil and water conditions are badly managed...
You will still have problems.
That's why coconut farming is a complete system.
Seedling.
Soil.
Water.
Spacing.
Nutrition.
Farm maintenance.
Marketing.
Everything works together.
When you are looking for land for coconut farming, don't just ask:
“How much is this land?”
Ask:
“Is this land suitable for the coconut farm I want to build?”
That's a much better question.
Because land is not cheap simply because you paid less for it.
If you buy unsuitable land and spend years fighting drainage, water or soil problems, that cheap land may become very expensive.
And then give your coconut seedlings the environment they need to grow.
Because that small seedling you plant today...
is depending on the soil around its roots tomorrow!
