“Yinka, I have one plot of land. How many coconut can I plant there?”
So, how many coconut trees can I plant on one plot?
Simple question, abi?
But don't be too quick to answer it.
Because when a farmer says:
“I have one plot.”
My next question is:
And sometimes the person looks at me like:
“Plot is plot now!” 😂
No o!
A plot is not one universal size across Nigeria.
Depending on the location and the way land is measured and sold, you may come across dimensions such as:
And these are not the same land area.
So if you ask me:
“How many coconut trees can I plant on one plot?”
I cannot responsibly give you one number until I know the dimensions of your plot and the spacing you want to use.
That is what we are going to calculate in this article.
This is where we need to start.
When somebody says:
“I bought one plot.”
That tells us the number of plots.
It doesn't necessarily tell us the exact land area.
For example:
100 × 100 = 10,000 square feet
But:
100 × 50 = 5,000 square feet
And:
120 × 60 = 7,200 square feet
Can you now see the difference?
All three people can say:
“I have one plot.”
But they don't have the same amount of land.
Before you buy your seedlings, find out:
Then calculate:
Length × Width = Area
If your land is 100 ft × 100 ft:
100 × 100 = 10,000 sq ft
If it is 100 ft × 50 ft:
100 × 50 = 5,000 sq ft
If it is 120 ft × 60 ft:
120 × 60 = 7,200 sq ft
Now we have something we can work with.
This is the second part of the calculation.
Knowing your plot size is only half of the story.
You also need to know:
This is called planting spacing.
And spacing matters because your coconut trees will not remain small seedlings forever.
Today, you may look at your seedling and say:
“There is plenty of space!”
Give it time. 😂
That small seedling is going to grow.
So you must plan for the mature plantation, not only what the farm looks like on planting day.
I wouldn't advise you to simply say:
“Let me put as many trees as possible on this plot.”
More trees do not automatically mean more profit.
If you plant too closely, you can create competition for:
And it can make farm management more difficult.

Read that before deciding your final planting layout.
Suppose your plot is:
That gives you:
10,000 square feet.
Now imagine you want to use approximately 7 m × 7 m spacing.
Remember, 7 metres is approximately 23 feet.
So you might initially think:
“23 feet between trees. Let me divide the plot.”
But don't simply divide 100 by 23 and assume the answer is the exact number of trees.
Why?
Because you need to consider:
This is why the final number should be treated as a layout calculation, not just a quick division.
The answer is:
And I want that answer to become normal among farmers.
Because somebody may tell you:
“One plot can take 20 coconut trees.”
Another says:
“No, it can take 30.”
Another:
“I planted 40 on mine.”
All three may be talking about different plot sizes or different spacing arrangements.
There is no single number that automatically applies to every plot in Nigeria.

Now let's see why this matters.

Look at that carefully.
A 100 × 100 ft plot is twice the area of a 100 × 50 ft plot.
Yet both owners may simply say:
“I have one plot.”
That is why you must know your actual dimensions.
This is one of the mistakes I want beginners to avoid.
Someone gets excited.
They say:
“I have one plot. Let me buy 30 coconut seedlings.”
Then they reach the farm.
They start planting.
Tree here.
Tree there.
Another one over there.
Suddenly:
“Yinka! We don't have space again!”
😂
That problem could have been avoided.
This is common too.
Some plots are irregular.
Maybe one side is longer.
Maybe there is a corner.
Maybe there is a building.
Maybe there is a road setback.
Maybe there is a drainage channel.
Maybe there is an existing tree.
Don't simply calculate the total area and assume every square foot is plantable.
You need to consider the actual usable planting area.
For example, if part of the plot is occupied by:
then that area isn't available for coconut planting.
This is very important for people planting coconut around their homes.
Don't calculate:
“My plot is 10,000 sq ft, therefore I can plant X number of trees.”
If your house occupies 2,000 sq ft, you no longer have 10,000 sq ft available for coconut.
And you need to consider access and other structures too.
So:
This is why a proper farm layout is useful.
You also don't want to plant the first row directly on the boundary simply because you want to maximise the number of trees.
Leave appropriate space for:
The exact layout will depend on your farm design.
Remember:
It is a system that needs to be accessible and manageable.
There isn't one universal spacing that applies to every coconut plantation.
Spacing depends on factors such as:

For example, coconut production guides commonly use spacing in the range of several metres between palms, but the appropriate spacing varies by variety and production system.
This is why I don't want you to hear:
“Plant exactly X metres everywhere.”
and apply it blindly.
Your planting design should match your particular coconut variety and farming system.
This is another reason why the question:
“How many coconut trees can I plant on one plot?”
doesn't have one universal answer.
If you are planting dwarf coconut, your spacing considerations may differ from those used for tall varieties.
Hybrids can also have their own recommended arrangements.
So before buying seedlings, know:
Then calculate.
Here is the basic idea.
Measure your plot.
Length × Width = total area
Determine the spacing.
For example:
7 m × 7 m
or whatever spacing is appropriate for your variety and system.
Convert the land dimensions into the same unit.
Don't calculate one side in feet and the other in metres.
Convert everything first.
Create your planting layout.
Don't simply divide the total area.
Leave room for boundaries and access.
Count the actual planting positions.
That gives you a more realistic number.
A layout helps you see the plantation before you put the seedlings in the ground.
You can determine:
Imagine planting 30 trees and later discovering:
“Ah! I should have left space for my irrigation line.”
Now you are moving things around.
Plan first.
Yes, you can plant coconut on a small piece of land if the site is suitable and the trees can be properly managed.
But don't think:
“Small land means I should squeeze everything together.”
No.
Your goal is not to win a competition for the highest number of seedlings on a plot.
Your goal is to establish healthy coconut trees.
Same principle.
Measure it.
Don't simply say:
“Half plot means half the number of coconut trees.”
It might be approximately half if the dimensions and layout are proportionally suitable, but the actual number depends on the shape and usable area.
For example, half of a 100 × 100 ft plot is not necessarily arranged in the same way as a separately purchased 50 × 100 ft parcel.
The shape can affect your layout.
Now you can repeat the calculation.
But again, don't automatically assume:
2 plots = exactly twice the number of trees.
If the plots are separated, irregularly shaped or used for different purposes, your layout may change.
If they are contiguous and you are treating them as one farm block, planning becomes easier.
This is another very important point.
A plot is not the same thing as an acre.
An acre is a standard unit of area:
But a "plot" can have different dimensions.
That means the number of plots you can get from an acre depends on what your local plot size actually is.
For example:
10,000 sq ft.
One acre is approximately 4.36 of those plot areas.
But:
5,000 sq ft.
One acre is approximately 8.71 of those plot areas.
And:
7,200 sq ft.
One acre is approximately 6.05 of those plot areas.
Can you now see why someone saying:
“One acre is six plots”
may be correct in one local land-measurement context but not universally correct?
It depends on the plot size.
If someone tells you:
“The land is five plots.”
Don't stop there.
Ask:
Because five 100 × 100 ft plots are not the same total area as five 100 × 50 ft plots.
The word plot alone isn't enough for accurate farm planning.
Still ask for the actual dimensions.
Don't be shy.
You are buying land.
You need to know what you are paying for.
Ask:
“What is the length?”
“What is the width?”
Then verify it.
For farm planning, measurements matter.
Now let's return to the question.
If you tell me:
“I have one plot.”
I will ask:
Which dimensions?
Then:
What coconut variety?
Then:
What spacing are you using?
Then:
What part of the plot is actually available for planting?
Then:
Do you need access paths or irrigation lines?
Only after those questions can we make a reasonable estimate.
This is a very important lesson.
A farmer may say:
“I want to plant as many coconut trees as possible.”
But I would rather hear:
“I want to plant the right number of coconut trees for my land and management system.”
Because more trees don't automatically equal more profit.
If the trees are overcrowded, poorly nourished or difficult to manage, you can create problems for yourself.
Not wasted land.
This is something beginners sometimes forget.
When you plant a seedling, you are looking at a small plant.
But your farm is not being designed for the seedling.
Think ahead.
The trees need room.
Your workers need room.
You need access.
Your irrigation system needs room.
Harvesting needs access.
Farm maintenance needs access.
That's why spacing decisions should be made carefully.
Now we are getting into another interesting topic.
Some farmers may want to grow other crops between young coconut trees while the plantation is still establishing.
Depending on the system, this can potentially help make use of available space during the early years.
But you must consider:
Don't just plant any crop between coconut trees because:
“There is empty space.”
The space is there partly because the coconut trees need room to grow.
If you intercrop, plan it properly.
This is where the idea of starting small becomes practical.
If your goal is to establish just 10 trees, you don't necessarily need a massive farm.
But you still need to consider:
spacing
water
soil
sunlight
maintenance
access
Even 10 trees deserve proper planning.
Ten healthy trees are better than 30 overcrowded trees that struggle.
Now the importance of planning becomes even greater.
At this level, you need to think more carefully about:
And if you are establishing hundreds or thousands of trees, you should move from casual measurement to a proper farm layout.
Let's say you tell me:
“Yinka, I have 100 ft × 100 ft land.”
Good.
We now know the land area.
Then you tell me:
“I'm planting hybrid coconut.”
Good.
Now we discuss the recommended spacing for your specific variety and production system.
Then we look at:
Then we calculate your planting positions.
That is how I want farmers to think.
Not:
“One plot = X number of coconut.”
Let's say somebody tells you:
“One plot can take exactly 20 coconut trees.”
Don't immediately believe or reject it.
Ask:
Once you ask those questions, you will understand where the number came from.
Before you buy seedlings, take a piece of paper.
Draw the shape of your land.
Write the dimensions.
Mark:
Then mark your proposed coconut positions.
Even a simple drawing can prevent expensive mistakes.
Let's use this as a practical reference.
A 100 × 100 ft plot has:
But that does not mean all 10,000 square feet should be filled with coconut trees.
You still need to plan your spacing.
And if you are using a spacing of approximately 7 metres × 7 metres, you should expect the actual number of planting positions to depend on your layout and boundary allowances.
This is why I prefer saying:
“A 100 × 100 ft plot can accommodate a certain number of coconut trees depending on the spacing and layout.”
rather than pretending there is one exact number for every farmer.
This plot has:
It is half the area of a 100 × 100 ft plot.
Naturally, it will accommodate fewer trees at the same spacing.
But again, the final number depends on how you arrange the trees.
This gives:
Again, different from both examples above.
So if somebody says:
“I have one plot.”
Your next question should be:
“How many feet by how many feet?”

That question will save you plenty of confusion.
Remember these three:
Length × Width
Based on your variety and production system.
After accounting for:
Once you have these three, your calculation becomes much more realistic.
You may be wondering:
“Why are you bringing water into a spacing article?”
Because your planting density and water management are connected.
If you establish a large number of young coconut trees, you need to be able to manage them.
Especially during dry periods.

This is perhaps the most important advice in this article.
Suppose your plot can technically accommodate 25 trees.
But you can only afford to properly establish and maintain 15.
There is no prize for planting 25 and losing 10.
Agriculture is about management.
A healthy plantation is more valuable than an overcrowded plantation.
Whenever somebody asks:
“How many coconut can I plant on one plot?”
Remember:
First know your dimensions.
Then know your spacing.
Then calculate the usable planting area.
Then design the layout.
Then decide how many seedlings you can actually afford to establish and maintain.
Start with the land.
What are the exact dimensions?
What type of coconut are you planting?
What spacing is appropriate?
Where will each tree be positioned?
How will you water the seedlings?
Have you marked where each seedling will go?
Can you move around the plantation?
Is the soil suitable and properly prepared?
Can you properly maintain the number of trees you plan to plant?
So, how many coconut trees can you plant on one plot?
And I'm happy to give you that answer because I would rather teach you how to calculate it than give you a number that may be wrong for your land.
Remember:
One plot does not have one universal size across Nigeria.
You may have:
100 × 100 ft
100 × 50 ft
120 × 60 ft
or another dimension.
Then you have to consider your coconut variety, spacing, layout and usable planting area.
So don't rush to buy seedlings.
